It can be intimidating to think about stepping into the gym for the first time, or for the first time in a while.
You might be afraid of not knowing what to do, getting injured, being judged or feeling out of place, not being able to keep up, or not seeing results. These are all totally normal. (Did I miss any?)
Here’s some things to keep in mind to help you overcome the fear of getting into the gym:
– Acknowledge your feelings. It’s normal to have those fears and we hear them all the time from new members. Recognizing these emotions can help you process them and move forward.
– Start small. Start with workouts and pacing that you can handle to build confidence and slowly ramp up. (ask about our On Ramp program)
– Set an achievable goal. For example: work out at the gym twice a week for 1 month. Celebrate each milestone in your training, no matter how small: new movements, a little more weight than you did last time, improving technique.
– Make a routine. Schedule your workouts ahead of time each week as important appointments on your calendar (because they are).
– Find a workout buddy. Join up with a friend, meet new friends in the group class who are going through the same journey, or get to know your coach during 1:1 training sessions. These all provide support, camaraderie, and motivation.
– Focus on the positive benefits. Remember why you’re doing this: increased energy, reduced stress, improved mood, strength, confidence, long term health, and more. What’s the biggest benefit you’re looking for from the gym?
– Don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone’s fitness journey takes a unique path. Focusing on your own progress can help reduce self-doubt and anxiety.
– Be kind to yourself. It’s ok to fail and have setbacks. Take a step back to celebrate a small win or something you learned, then keep going. You got this.
