CrossFit vs Regular Gym?

What are some differences between doing CrossFit and going to a regular gym?

1. Physical skills developed.

  – A regular gym routine typically includes machines, slow & controlled movements with some free weights, and some cardio on a machine.  This develops strength and cardio endurance.

  – A CrossFit program includes olympic weightlifting movements, dynamic gymnastic movements, and cardio machines, mixed together in different combinations.  The use of a wide range of functional movements adds in 8 additional physical skills on top of strength and endurance: flexibility, coordination, power, speed, agility, balance, accuracy, and stamina.

2. Time and results.

  – Most of our regular gym routines turn into just that: a routine.  Your body quickly adapts and results plateau.  “If nothing changes, nothing changes.” We run out of ideas for keeping the program fresh to continue the progress.

  – CrossFit programming is constantly varied. Every day is a new mix that your body hasn’t seen before, with occasional benchmarks that get re-tested to measure progress.  As a result, your body is constantly adapting and results come quicker and don’t plateau out.

3. Coaching

  – Most of us end up piecing together our own regular gym routine and doing it by ourselves at the gym. As a result, we avoid many movements where we lack confidence that we’re doing it correctly.  It’s also very easy to sandbag when you’re on your own!

  – At Reverb, you have a coach guiding you each workout whether you’re in the group class or a personal training session.  This means you’ll learn proper technique and have confidence that you’re working at the right intensity level for you. This also means you can confidently GET STARTED no matter WHERE you are currently at.

Those are just a few of the top differences.  The list goes on: Motivation, community of like-minded people, accountability, guidance on nutrition, tackling new challenges that build confidence far beyond the wall of the gym, and more…

That’s why many of us CrossFitters haven’t set foot in a regular gym in ages.  We get more of the results we want from 3-5 hours a week at Reverb than we did from 10 hours a week at a regular gym doing our own thing.  It’s a no-brainer!
